Brian T. McMahon, a native of Chicago and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, is a full professor at Virginia Commonwealth where he holds appointments in four schools including the School of Medicine's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

He is a co-founder of the VCU Center for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering. McMahon is a fellow in the American Psychological Association and a NIDRR Distinguished Research Fellow.

He holds certifications in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Case Management and was licensed as a psychologist for 25 years in five states. He served on the executive council of four professional associations including the American Counseling Association and the APA Division of Rehabilitation Psychology. McMahon is past president of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and a recipient of its Career Research Award.

Other honors include teaching or achievement awards from the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Illinois Institute of Technology, and VCU.

Currently, Dr. McMahon studies workplace discrimination and disability for the U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. His previous body of work relates to proprietary rehabilitation, case management, the vocational consequences of head injury, and hate crimes toward people with disabilities.
